Book Club

Last week, we had a great conversation about the Pulitzer Prize winning book Angela’s Ashes in our book club. It was interesting to hear how some people loved it and thought it was quite funny while others felt that it was too much misery piled upon misery.

This book was a good example of how writing something from a child’s voice allowed the author to offer distance from the terrible things that he endured. This was the only life this child had known. We noted that our member Jelaine Lombardi used this very effectively in her memoir Running Around Naked.   https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Jelaine-Lombardi-ebook/dp/B0BNY2MDRJ

One thing we all agreed upon was that Frank McCourt’s dialogue style was surprisingly clear and compelling considering there was no use of quotation marks. Some expressed a desire to try this in their own writing, but others worried that they would be scorned for trying to copy his style.

Vote for our next book below. We’ll meet to discuss 9-10 weeks from now. https://forms.gle/M9JcatsPeLXbU44g8

Upcoming events

I’d prefer that you sign up through Meetup so I know who to expect and so that you know what the agenda is for the week, but if that’s too problematic, you can go directly to the Zoom link that we use every week:
